Context

WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that was established in July 1946 and whose objective is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. WHO’s primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system. WHO’s main areas of work are health systems; health through the life-course; immunization, noncommunicable and communicable diseases; preparedness, surveillance and response; and corporate services.

The mission of WHO’s immunization Programme (“The Programme”) is to ensure everyone, everywhere, at every age receive recommended vaccines. Ensure coverage and equity to immunization and prevent the target population from vaccine preventable diseases.

In the context of the WHO immunization program, at the country level, the incumbent will provide technical support on data collection, analysis and interpretation to further strengthening the program.


Task description


Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the immunization team lead or his/her designated mandated representative(s), working closely with respective technical leads at the WHO country office Sudan, the UN Volunteer will:
• Develop annual surveillance plan for data management from the localities and states.
• Monthly data collection, analysis and interpretation to highlight high risk area and population and guide the program for corrective actions.
• Ability to visualise the data using GIS and other software, develop dashboards and infographic reports.
• Conduct training need assessment and transmit knowledge and skills to other personnel.
• Support and coordinate investigation of vaccine preventable disease outbreak with special emphasis on notification, investigation, reporting and monitoring of AFP and other VPD surveillance.
• Work with the State Ministry of Health (SMOH), private sector, NGOs and communities’ network and frontline workers is strengthened for the effective and sustained surveillance.
• Evaluate the selected sentinel sites and select new sites according to requirements of the program on a regular basis.
• Submit quality monthly reports and end of assignment report to supervisor.
• Perform any other related incident-specific duties, as required by the functional supervisor.

Skills and experience

at the national level in public health and health sector coordination.

• Past experience in capacity building, developing and promoting collaborative partnerships, is required.
• Prior relevant work experience in WHO/UN system, health cluster partners, relevant nongovernmental or humanitarian organizations, is desirable.
• Strong overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, etc.), and office technology equipment;
• Fluency in spoken and written English
• In-depth knowledge of public health programmes with focus on prevention and control of immunization
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of operational management of health aspects/consequences of humanitarian crises and outbreaks in field settings;
• Demonstrated skills in proposal and report writing, knowledge of and experience with needs assessments in emergency settings, strategic information analysis and planning and ability to anticipate new trends in the field of public health and take actions accordingly;
• Capacity building skills for the development, implementation and analysis of technical cooperation programmes and activities, including the development of programmatic indicators.
